Death of a Soul

Three bullets pierced the heart; an instant death of a soul
‘Hey Ram’ uttered Mahatma, felled, serving a noble role
He fought for downtrodden, got freedom without bloodshed
Made no fuss of life’s ordeals, n non violence acts watershed
Every martyr be it Jesus, Mahatma or Luther King
The end was violent n gory adorned with a halo ring
They uplifted the humanity with their noble deeds
Little did they know that this was payback by the creed?
With every such loss, humanity loses a human face
Still we claim to belong, to a loving human race

PS- Image kind Courtesy Google- Mahatma Gandhi after assassination

(The Independence Day of India is round the corner, 15 Aug. This is a tribute to Mahatma and other martyrs like him who sacrificed their lives for the humanity.)

  2. Nothing makes me cry more than that movie "Gandhi" Very well posted, Rahul. Proud to be an Indian, and sad that we really don't live up to Gandhi's dreams. Sigh.

    1. Only a Britisher like Sir Richard Attenborough could have made that poignant film having understood the pains endured by the Mahatma and other freedom fighters!! We are doing everything opposite to the Gandhian spirit:(

  3. We should indeed hang our heads in shame for being such a soulless people, for we can't live up to the ideals of great men and even going on to destroying them!

    1. Indeed Zephyr! The darkest hour as Sir Winston Churchill rightly remarked that with freedom coming to India, the country will be ruled by fools and even water and air would be taxed! Unfortunately his prophecy came true in our own lifetime:(

  9. Beautifully penned. India and Indians are fast losing their soul. Youngster of today only know about Sonia,Rahul,Priyanka Gandhi. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi is long forgotten and his memories are symbolically retrieved from the dustbin during the months of January,August & October every year.Sad but true !

  14. Hi Rahul, this is so heartfelt and haunting. We recently also held a tribute to Mahatma recently where I live, because he had been here all those years ago. Its terribly sad to think how these great souls left the world but what we can look back at in gratification is the difference that they made to all our lives and even though their struggle may have been long before even I was born, we still reap the benefits and lessons from it now. Thanks for this, greatly penned!

  20. Maybe if he had lived, he might have fought endlessly for the good of the people, but since we had to suffer, endure corrupted leaders, finding no concrete ways to remove them, he died.
However, even after his sacrifice and his terrible death we have not learnt anything.
Right now we have a Anna, who too, was not able to lead the way, because of his over enthusiastic team, and I am glad he finally broke away from them. It is the team that is around a good leader, that brings bad name to any cause or fight for the right.
I pray, we have more Gandhis and more Annas to give us freedom from all that is wrong in our country.
It is indeed a post right from the heart.

  21. Nice! When I see Indians pay tribute to MG and similar great soulsI start thinking is it I-Day? Or R-day? Is it enough to pay tribute to the great leaders of our country? Why don't we remember some heroes of present like Tukaram Omble and similar? who sacrificed his life to fight terrorism so that our life after freedom be safe? Is it not our responsibility to remember and salute all these after independence heroes too on this "August 15th" ?

I would like to see posts from you about people we do not know about and deserve the respect of the nation!

  24. A very patriotic poem and apt for such a joyous occassion. Thinking about those freedon fighters, I get the feeling that its time for a second freedon struggle, but this time it would be against ourselves, inside us, something which we have to wrench and thorw out. Corruption and crime against women. The blood of those greats were not shed for such pititful condition today. The poem has touched a chord.

Why is it always that the people who bring about a change in any existing system, are never accepted whole heartedly by one and all? Why are there always a few black sheep who can't stand something happening for good?
