A Bar Dancer

Slender twirling figure glides smoothly with grace
Burning desires of passions sets stage aflame
Her luscious red lips and fiery kohl eyes
Set many hearts a flutter in transfixed gaze
With every little gesture the crowds engage
Whistles, catcalls crescendo with drummers pace
She knows the motions n steals the hearts
The audience loves the acts of this ‘tart’
Inwardly she cries with all her heart
It was not her choice to bare body for art
Choking smoke n noise accompany this mart
Destiny is cruel she just performs her part

nicely described and very true. Except few dancers, most girls join this profession out of compulsions and need. sad but a reality.

    a well written poem!

  10. Thinking of such people who are in a profession, out of compulsion, we must realize that, we crib so much about little things, if only for a moment we put ourselves in their position, we would understand how much better off we are, and stop creating unnecessary tension in our own lives, and be happy with whatever we have. If they can smile and carry on with their lives, why can't we?
    Nice poem, very thought provoking.

  17. A very interestingly described poem Rahul. I read the first few lines thinking, wow, the glamour and attention of her dancing duties and then I got to the 9th line and the entire keynote changed into something more emotional and I felt despair for her, its not really a choice, is it? To think of what people have to do to survive in a corrupt world!

    1. Sam, all that glitters is not gold! I know must of us love to see the dance but sometimes the one who is entertaining us is suffering pain deep down! I too wish people have a choice to do what they like!

    3. Sam, the realities are different for each place but the essence was that those who are driven in such profession out of making their ends meet is not good:)Hope you will continue to enjoy life's pleasures as they come:)

  19. Loved your poem; loved your dancer; loved the sad thoughts you ascribed to her. Can't help hoping that some day, a dancer at a bar in India will join the profession for the joy of dancing and nothing else; can't help wishing that the men who come to watch her learn to appreciate her art. I guess that is what it will remain - wishful thinking.
