  4. Hi Rahul, interesting guest post...I fully agree on what you wrote about employees needing to attain a glance between work and personal time. They would be more productive in that manner. I think the reason we have such high stress levels, depression, anxiety and illness these days all leads to people being overworked. But then again, the opposite isn't a good option either. Here in SA, most people go late to work and leave early, have extra long lunches and don't put in their full 100%, which is unfair to the employer. How do think is the best way to solve this issue?

    1. I think in the right environment, most people are motivated well to do their best, and in that respect, you and others are lucky in SA:)There are a few black sheep everywhere who know how to hoodwink the system, Sam:(

  9. Thanks a lot Ashwini for relating to the post so well. It is a huge tragedy that legacy of sychophancy leaves a huge trail of discontent and social upheavel behind! It is a pity that people have to work on weekends! Just goes to show how poor we are at planning things! I sincerely hope you are able to enjoy your time beyond working hours too:)

  10. My husband was the type who would do his work and leave office in time to reach home also in time. He had no interest in hanging around, doing nothing but gossiping, and playing Table Tennis, smoking and whiling away precious time in a non productive way.
I remember one of his co worker who used to always come back pretty late from work, and his wife used to always crib about the way he was wedded to his work, and since he knew that my husband used to come back on time, he specially used to request me not to ever reveal to his wife, about just being late without any work.
Some men like to spend time away from their cribbing wives, and what better excuse they can give than to say they have work to do.
The cribbing wives can crib all they want, the men will continue to enjoy the time away from their wives. Can we blame them?
One needs a balance in life to overcome such stresses, for excuses is not a cure for this problem.

  11. Great topic Rahul! I had this one friend whose husband always came home later than my husband would, (we lived in a colony n worked for the same company),never missed a chance to tell me that her husband was the most hardworking,I just smiled at her immature comparison to boost her ego.

  12. Wonderful post. Until and unless there is an emergency, there isn't any any need to stay back late after office hours. If you can't finish your work during office hours, you are simply incompetent!

  15. Wonderful post and very well written Rahul sir. :) Thank you so much for sharing your lovely work experiences. There are valuable life lessons there. And as you have rightly pointed out, elsewhere around the world, this tendency is much less pronounced. People are very particular in leaving work on time and spending weekends in total disconnect with office. And they are not less productive.

There is also another aspect to this. There are also people who genuinely stay late for work. That too as you said, is not a healthy practice. One, for a proper work-life balance. And second, in our work place, if we are willing to stay and work longer, very soon people take it for granted and assume that you would work long hours anyways and you will end up not getting credit for it. So it is very important to work smartly and not slog ourselves to death. Very useful post and very thoughtfully written. :)
