Unadulterated Fun

The theatre was almost full and it could not have been a livelier evening. The stage was festooned with flowers and a small podium rested besides the closed curtains. There was a constant flurry of activity as the small children were running around, dressed in eye catching attires. It was the Annual Day function of a Kindergarten school, where I too was a guest. After a short wait the Chief Guest arrived and the pleasantries were exchanged between the school principal and the chief guest. A welcome address and lighting of the lamp by the chief guest marked the commencement of the evening function. There was an invocation by the tiny tots. Next on the list was enactment of the story of the ‘Monkeys and the Cap seller’. The small kids dressed as monkeys and the cap seller in the colorful attire looked cute. There faces were painted with great effort by the art teacher to make them look realistic. After stealing the caps the monkeys adorned the caps on their heads clumsily. The MC was a young girl who did a good job of cheering the young kids as they performed and engaging the audience with her witty remarks.

The next event would have set many a fashion designer’s heart a flutter! The three year old bimbos set the stage on fire with one of the best choreographed fashion show! The young lasses draped in long gowns, skirts to the haute couture in tradition shows of likes of Roberto Cavalli, Chloe, Dolce & Gabbana, Donna Karan et al. The lilting music cast the spell on audience and the sweet girls hurled flying kisses! I wondered that just two decades from now may be one of them would be in the ‘breaking news’ of being yet another Miss World or Miss Universe. !

A dance recital was to follow and lo and behold the music refused to play! The sound technician tried every thing by swapping some wires on music system, changing decks of the CD player, but it did not budge! The poor girl waited endlessly for the music to start! The curtains were downed with an announcement of regret that the performance will follow later!

Young Lord Curzon bellowed as the poor Lady waited on the small chair aghast! He was unwilling to come on the stage and was being dragged by the hapless teacher! The cute Sita in shimmering red dress waited patiently, as Lord Rama struggled to tie his hair as the crown kept falling off his head! Shahjahan threw away the head gear while Mumtaz longingly looked in his direction. In came Razia Sultan brandishing her sword, to the sheer delight of all. Lord Shiva and Parvati were the only ones who came and blessed the audience without a glitch! You guessed it right! It was a fancy dress show being enacted.. This was absolute unadulterated fun and a rib tickler all the way! I had not laughed like this for a long time! A few more dance items and songs followed which were equally enthralling! It was a show which everyone enjoyed and was an instant hit with all audience alike! I only wish we get too see similar fun stuff on TV programs once in a while, instead of insipid laughter recordings !
