The recent
decision of the British to exit the EU reminds of the British comedy movie ’No
Sex Please, We are British’ released in 1973. The main protagonist Runnicles a
clerk in a small town British Bank is horrified on receiving a package
containing pornography rather than a calculator he expected. His efforts to dispose
it off turns into a series of hilarious events involving a bank inspector, the
police and of course the criminal to whom that pornographic package belongs to.
The only difference between the two situations is that many a British are cursing
the decision to call for a referendum on 23 Jun where a country fed by lies ,TV
panel discussions by so called experts led to the decision of withdrawing from
EU( just 51.9% voting in favor of this decision). As an afterthought many want
a re run of the poll. The situation is far from amusing unlike in the movie.
After long deliberations
, UK had joined EEC on 01 Jan 1973 that became EU on 01 Nov 1993. The many a benefits
of common currency and a borderless travel were still not agreed upon. Those
who do not hail from EU, US, and Australia still need separate visas and have
to possess Pound Sterling when in UK.
After the
second world war creation of EU was perhaps the first step in forging a permanent
peace between the 27 signatories, besides a host of other reduction of trade barriers,
free movement, and jobs. The young are a angry lot as more than 75% of
the Gen Now had cast a vote in favor of staying with EU compared to most of the
ageing population living on pensions, and shuttling between the hospitals who
sealed the fate to exit the EU. Their dreams of living a life in EU, marrying
within EU nationals, travel and seek jobs just died. Many of the young ones who
reside and work in other countries of EU and USA , did not get an opportunity
to cast their vote being ineligible to vote. Only the areas of London, Scotland
and North Ireland cast vote in favor of staying with the EU while those in
country side favored exiting. Apparently, those who have money voted in favor
of staying with EU while those who do not have it, voted out. Also, strange as it may sound, many Britons
have Googled about what it means to be with EU hit an all time high just after
the poll results. The immediate effect was devaluation of Pound Sterling by almost 10% besides as pall of gloom descended over EU, and long time ally USA.
‘The
gentleness of the English civilization is perhaps its most marked characteristics.
You notice it, the instant you set foot on English soil’ in the words of George
Orwell. Not now , Surely! It resembles a
family with wrong members in control.

There are obvious downsides to living in a totally democratic country. I commend David Cameron for delivering on his promise to give the British people a referendum post his election victory. Living in the UK I voted to remain, we will now just work with what we have. Irony has it, those in deprived areas voted to leave, they are surely under a falsehood as they will be the one's hit the hardest in my view, as we Brits struggle to maintain financial stability.
ReplyDeleteThanks for reading! The freedom does not mean we get the best options but at least people can do what they want and at times pay a price as in the current scenario.
DeleteSo true - it's now a country divided, unfortunately.
ReplyDeleteSigh! not a good stuation:(
DeleteBrexit, well explained, Mr Bhatia. :)
ReplyDeleteThere's still a lot of confusion and a lot of doubt in the air. Looks like we'll just have to wait and watch what happens and it seems like its going to take a few years for the dust to settle.
The wait begins...
Thanks for reading,Divya,it will take some time before the veil lifts, but they sure will have a handful of problems.
DeleteBrexit. You have said it well......Next three months will actually critical as changes get into realty.
ReplyDeleteEU wants to get rid of the estranged partner as soon as possible!
DeleteThanks for the details. But i will say just desserts to this arrogant race though i do feel for the GEN NOW.
ReplyDeletePeople get what they deserve is a universal truth :)
DeletePity they still think they are the best and above the rest:(
ReplyDeleteTime will tell how wise the British have been. Thanks for reading Amit.
DeleteWell explained, Rahulji.
ReplyDeleteMany are repenting Brexit.
World markets are in a turmoil...
It has been a self inflicted pain,Anita as I see.
ReplyDeleteYouve explained it in a very nice way. A close friend of mine is a young guy in his early 20s. He voiced exact concerns as youve listed here. What more; people were carried away by empty talks not really understanding the implications. Its a global age; and they cant go back to being isolated. The irony is that Brits dont like Drump's anti immigration rhetoric; but they find it tolerant if they are anti immigration.
ReplyDeleteAm happy you liked the post!Brits are no better than us when exercising rights on such an important issue:(
DeleteMore than 3 million people have signed and said they have got second thoughts and want repoll. Many didn't know the consequences. Thanks for giving the complete details of the funny 'Brexit'!
ReplyDeleteThanks Sandhya that you liked the brief details! Don't know if this will see the light of the day!
DeleteWhat surprised me the most is how little they knew of the consequences before voting. Just goes to prove that referendums are a flawed way of taking objective decisions.
ReplyDeleteSo true Rachna that these polls in democratic setups are flawed and exhibit more herd mentality than a rational judgement .
DeleteI read 70,000 Londoners signed a petition to break away from UK and stay with EU
ReplyDeleteThe world is watching and UK has set a bad precedent.
Too little, too late but surely they set a bad example with disastrous outcome written on the wall!
DeleteThe movie sounds interesting. Enjoyed reading this one.
ReplyDeleteHa ha Alka, such a movie is bound to be more entertaining than the outcome of Brexit:)
DeleteHi Rahul, Brexit has divided them big time. Many are against it.
ReplyDeleteTime will tell the wisdom of this decision,Rachna!
DeleteThey voted in 76 too. I don't fully understand the ramifications of it, but I feel it's not good for global economy. Anyway, who are we!
ReplyDeleteWill search for the comedy online.
Unfortunately in today's world the decisions taken by powerful nations do effect the other countries as well especially exports, manpower working abroad etc, but as you said 'who are we'?
DeleteI was horrified of their decision, what good can it possibly do to their country? Such a pathetic vote for a country that is (maybe was now) considered to be a major power in the world affairs!
ReplyDeleteStrange are the ays of orld when it comes to voting wisdom and more so in this case:(Thanks for reading Alok!
DeleteMade a note of the movie :) sounds fun :)
